Description: Unfortunately, the United States is about to reach and exceed 3,000,000 deaths for the first time in a single year. In addition, the U.S. may reach 1,000 deaths per 100,000 of the population. At the SOA, we’d like to hear your comments and thoughts on these trends. Is 2020 an anomaly? Will these mortality trends continue?

Description: The Committee on Life Insurance Mortality and Underwriting Surveys of the Society of Actuaries Research Institute sent companies a survey in May of 2019 on mortality improvement practices. Note this survey was completed prior to the onset of COVID-19, so that issue was not addressed in this survey. The purpose of the survey was to examine mortality improvement practices with respect to life insurance and annuity pricing and financial projections in both the U.S. and Canada.

To develop these rates, the SOA relied upon data furnished by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the U.S. Census Bureau, and the Social Security Administration. A document summarizing key observations and the process used to develop the rates, along with a table of the rates themselves, can be found below.

Description: This study quantifies the range of intercompany variability in mortality. Mean actual-to-expected (A/E) ratios based on amount were calculated in each quintile for every combination of six key variables.

Description: A comparison of recently used mortality assumptions among state-based and large-city public pension plans.

Description: The Mortality and Longevity Strategic Research Program Steering Committee (MLPSC) is interested in examining U.S. older age mortality trends for at least the general, individual life and individual annuity populations. The purpose of the research is to create a resource for actuaries and others in developing mortality assumptions and further SOA Research Institute work in this area.

Description: This report provides various summaries of the above listed data and provides observations from these summaries, with a goal to help actuaries understand the emerging trends in mortality due to COVID-19.
